There is still debate as to whether Poodles originated in France or Germany. But even though the Poodle is the National Dog of France, it’s most likely they’re German in origin. “Poodle” comes from the German word “pudelhund”. Pudel means “to splash” and hund means dog.
Poodles have the reputation of being spoiled lap dogs. Actually, they are working dogs. They’re still used to hunt around the world, primarily as water retrievers. They’ve also been used as guide dogs, guard dogs, military dogs and circus performers!
You may already know the 3 sizes recognized by the AKC: Standard, Miniature and Toy. There two other sizes, however. Moyen, or Klein Poodles are between Miniature and Standard Poodles and Teacup Poodles are the smallest, often weighing only a couple pounds.
Several AKC recognized breeds trace part of their history to Poodles. The Poodle has been used to help the Schnauzer family, as well as the Bichon family (Bichon Frise), Maltese, Havanese and Bolognese dogs. The Poodle may have been used to change the size of these other dogs and to help improve health – or even possibly save some from extinction. Miniature Schnauzers, in fact, may be a cross between Standard Schnauzers and Poodles.
Today, Poodles continue to be used to help “improve” other breeds. There are many such dogs, and the newest are called Doodles.
While it’s true that all dogs shed, Poodles shed far less than other dogs! For this reason, you’ll have less issues with dander, which is the real problem for those with allergies.
Poodles are also known to be “clean-smelling” dogs. This is another advantage for pet owners, especially when living in close quarters! Beware, however, that Poodles require regular grooming!
Poodles are water dogs and their hair gets very heavy when it gets wet. So to make swimming easier, owners learned to shave the hair on their backside. They leave the hair on the front of their body to help keep their vital organs and joints warm in very cold weather.
