Mystery Respiratory Illness Affecting Dogs Across the Country

Update: New Information/Opinion
Dec. 27, 2023

Don’t succumb to fear over this “mystery” illness, which may or may not be a mystery, and may be a combination of different, common respiratory illnesses. Take common-sense precautions with your dog depending on their health and age, but don’t “protect” them from living their best life. And, of course, if your pet does get sick, get them seen immediately.

Dr. Becker offers a terrific take on this “new mystery illness”. I recommend you read her opinion on this, (Read by clicking here.) And as always, if your pet is ill, get him/her to the vet immediately!

Important, please read...

A new, mystery illness is spreading among dogs across the country. The sickness starts as a cough that can last for weeks, and often turns into pneumonia

So far, cases have been reported in 14 states (list provided below) and it’s expected to surface in other parts of the county. The illness is very similar to kennel cough, but vets are reporting that the illness doesn’t seem to respond well to common protocols.

Clinical Signs: Highly contagious, rapidly spreading among dogs in contact with other dogs. Acute cough, sneezing, nasal discharge, eye discharge, fever, anorexia, lethargy. Severe form can progress to life-threatening pneumonia requiring oxygen and ventilator support. Cough may persist for weeks to months.

According to the University of Florida, dogs most at risk are those that visit with other dogs at places like boarding facilities, day care, dog shows and dog parks. They also note that people and other species don’t seem to be at risk.

Below is a list of the states affected so far, followed by a list of symptoms to watch for. (NOTE: if you notice any of these symptoms, it’s recommended you take your dog to your vet immediately.)

Lastly, here are a few things we recommend here at the farm that might help you keep your pup healthy, with a strong immune system:

  1. Feed your dog an excellent, balanced diet. For dry food, we love Muenster Pet (use coupon code LOSTCREEK55 for 55% off your first order – if you’re a first time customer.) For those of you considering a raw diet, we recommend Raw Paws Pet Food. Be sure to use the code LOSTCREEK10 to receive 10% off your entire order.
  2. Make sure your pup is getting plenty of fresh air, sunshine and exercise.
  3. Something we don’t do often enough – CLEAN & STERILIZE your dogs food and water bowls. Especially if you feed a raw diet, this is important. (But it’s important even with dry diets, too!)
  4. Often overlooked, brush your dog’s teeth. Here are 2 items that might be worth trying: pet dental finger wipes; or Vet’s Best Dog Teeth Cleaning Kit
  5. Offer your dog supplemental probiotics or fish oil. Recommended by vets, these are excellent, affordable additions to your dog’s diet!
