We have a new favorite chew toy!
We’ve been using Himalayan Yak chews for a few years now and they’re our new favorite. These chews don’t make a mess, they’re nutritious and they don’t stink like other chews. Most importantly, dogs like them.
Our adult dogs love them and we give them to our puppies beginning at about 8 weeks (just about the time they want to bite anything and everything with those razorblade teeth!) These chew sticks have become our go-to to keep teething puppies busy, so that they don’t seek out our fingers instead.
Are they healthy?
Himalayan Yak Chews are 100% organic, human-grade treats. They’re made from hardened Yak cheese and are high in protein, low in fat and are gluten and lactose free. They have no artificial colors or flavors, but dogs still love them!
Are they safe?
Despite being a very hard treat, these soften as your dog chews them. They’re good for teeth, but far less likely to break a tooth as with a hard bone.
*It is of course always important to supervise your dog at all times. A small chew treat of any kind can pose a choking hazard!
Some dogs are finicky.
I will almost certainly have a few people contact me to tell me that their pups didn’t like the Himalayan Yak Chew. That’s ok! We’ve had many dogs that LOVED antlers. We’ve had a few that looooved Kong toys. Raw bones are great, we love them and they almost always work. But they’re harder to find, hard to store and almost impossible to travel with.
In our house on any given night, one kid wants Chinese food, one wants pizza and one wants a quesadilla. Same with dogs, basically! We know these aren’t for all dogs, BUT we’ve had lots of success with them, and I think you should give them a try.

How they are made:

Yak milk is collected by farmers.

Butter is extracted and milk is boiled with continuous stirring. During this process, lime juice is added.

At around 45 minutes, white cheese begins to form, which is then separated.

The fresh, soft cheese is spread onto a piece of cotton cloth. The cloth is tied and pressed firmly to drain all excess water.

The yak cheese is then cut into smaller pieces and smoked for 30-45 daysin a wood fire oven.
